He is a true leader and role model in teaching others to step up out of adversity and take responsibility for themselves and their community. Kevin Rogers' career is a testament to his passion for education, employment and a love of his community for now and in the future. He is one of the founders of the Yugul Mangi Aboriginal Development Corporation, and is a shining example of what dedication and perspiration can achieve. Kevin worked everywhere in his earlier days -- building churches as a labourer and working as a lab assistant for mining companies in Arnhem Land. "My first pay was 15 quid, building tanks in the NT." After working several sporadic odd jobs, Kevin's growing interest in developing his community took him to study teaching at Batchelor Institute of Indigenous Further Education. After earning his qualifications in education and working as an assistant teacher at Kormilda College in Darwin, Kevin chose to bring his knowledge back to Ngukurr where he introduced training programs for his community. Adamant on developing his community and encouraging self-sufficiency, Kevin's hard work was rewarded when he was elected president of the Ngukurr Community Council. This honour inspired Kevin, along with other community leaders, to develop the community-based corporation Yugul Mangi. Yugul Mangi Aboriginal Development Corporation is a community-based organisation with representatives from seven indigenous language groups of the lower Roper River/Gulf of Carpentaria region of south-east Arnhem Land. It is devoted to the development of communities within this region and has worked with government bodies and not-for-profit organisations to ensure its communities' growth. As well as being one of the founding members of Yugul Mangi, a mentor for the Roper Gulf Shire, and a respected leader, Kevin also acts as a community mentor with the Traditional Credit Union to support self-sufficient financial management to ensure long-term prosperity and financial stability for the greater community. A man with many hats, Kevin is constantly looking to the future. "I'm hoping to go back to country, to my tribal land and start up tourism. I also want to start up a cultural awareness program run for students to get some bush skills. . . Come out and teach them about country -- that's my future direction."
